The Best Workouts For Men Over 50
As we age, the risk of heart disease increases. Being over 50 compounds the risk. Being inactive for less than 30 minutes in a day adds risk even more. Then comes the danger of being overweight which provides the killer punch.
As a man over 50, you can’t change the risk factors but you are able to avoid some of them through exercise and eating healthy. It is never too late to start working out.
Several studies have shown that exercise helps in the promotion of a healthy life. Some of the best exercises for men over 50 are:
1. Cardio
It is always recommended that you have 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week. This is for health and weight maintenance. A man over 50 should have at least 30 minutes of moderate cardio exercise a day. This can involve swimming, biking, brisk walking, running or exercise videos. For those who can’t get 30 continuous minutes in a day, try splitting the minutes provided they add up to at least the thirty minutes.
2. Strength training.
When a person gets older, the muscles loses the ability to contract. This can be changed by strength training. Strength training is also important in the regulation of glucose metabolism. It is important to work out the muscles through pushups, modified squats and lunges, and using a lightweight resistant band. It is important to have at least 24 hours between the strength exercises because as you get older you can easily overuse injuries.
3. Flexible exercises.
To start the day, do some stretching even if it only takes some few minutes. Do some head circles or stretch in the shower. Stretch the calf muscles and hamstring.
4. Balance exercises
It is important to have some balance training if you are over 50. Try standing on a tippy toe, stand on one leg, try standing in one place for at least ten minutes. This should be done every day.
5. Core training.
Never avoid abs. This will easily result in back pain.
– Try some minutes of abdominal exercises
-Do some crunches
